How dogs react to people and their surroundings, in general, is known as dog behavior. A dog’s behavior stems from how he is raised and trained. Puppy behavior, on the other hand, is a combination of his surroundings and his still being a puppy e.g. puppy chewing on things. Recognizing dog play behavior is important when they are young. Certain behavior is accepted and even expected as a puppy, but must be worked on, as they grow older.
Anyone that has ever owned a dog will say his or her dog showed some kind of bad dog behavior at one time or another. It is very important to realize that there is no such thing is a ‘bad dog’, just bad dog behavior. Properly dealing with these dog behavior problems will be the key to a well-behaved dog. Dogs will also go through dog behavior stages as they grow older. Dogs are a lot like children in that they will get away with as much as we allow them to.
It is important to realize that certain dog behavior patterns are a result of natural instinct. Even though, many people believe that dogs don’t think, that is a misconception. Animal research has determined that dog’s reaction to most circumstances is 80% instinct and 20% training. With this in mind, it is important to remember this when training a dog with certain dog behavior problems. Another factor to remember is that no two dogs are the same. What dog behavior training works for one dog may not work for another.
A perfect example is dog and cat behavior. A dog and cat can both live in the same house and be treated the same, but they will react differently to different situations. A dog that is severely scolded will come when called five minutes later, whereas the cat will remember and hold a grudge for a bit.
Many dog facilities offer obedience and behavior dog training for a reasonable cost. Some will train without you there on a one on one basis with them and your dog. There are other classes where you are present to work with your dog as a group with others. These trainers are professionals and will be able to answer any dog behavior question you may have. They will all tell you that the key to successful training is consistency.
