Dog Bones

Dog bones have been around for years. I’m referring to the dog bones that our dogs love to eat. There isn’t a treat they enjoy more than a dog bone. Almost any treat you give a dog they will gobble up in one bite. But, not a dog bone. They savor each chew and when they are tired of chewing it, they will bury it to save it for “a rainy day”.

There has been much controversy and debate through the years regarding dogs and chicken bones and cooking dog bones. Many people still give their dog bones, although some are afraid their dog may choke. Most vets will say that bones are fine for dogs, but should not be cooked. One reason is that cooking makes them more brittle and likely to splinter in the dog’s mouth. Secondly, cooking deprives them of the natural vitamins in the raw bones. Raw knucklebones are excellent forms of calcium and therefore great for your dog’s teeth. As for dogs and chicken bones, most vets still recommend you not give them to your dog as they splinter very easily.

Besides being our dog’s favorite snack, dog bones have other uses. There are very cute pewter dog bone buttons and pewter dog bone charms available for purchase.
