Electronic Fences
More and more dog owners are using an electronic dog fence to keep their dog (s) in their own backyard, not roaming, and disturbing the neighborhood. Year ago, when we heard the term ‘electric fence’ we thought of the one strand wire fence that kept cows in by way of an electric current when they touched it. This type of fence now is called an electric dog fence or a dog electric fence.
The dog electronic fence comes in two styles: wired and unwired.
Electric dog fences that are wired consist of a wire that is buried under the ground surrounding the area you want the dog to stay in, a transmitter in your house or garage and a collar that the dog wears. When the dog gets to his boundary limitation, a warning beep and a small shock will touch the dog. This type of fence is also known as an underground electric dog fence.
The electric fence for dog that is unwired is very similar except there is no wired buried underground. There are small flags used on the boundary area. Both methods are effective as far as an electrical dog fence. They both rely upon our maintenance to keep functioning properly. A battery that needs to be replaced periodically runs the collar. The transmitter for the electrical dog fence will stop working during a power failure. If power is shut off to the electric fence, the dog will be able to get out of the yard.
Many people question are dog electric fences safe for dogs. The answer is yes. The small current that goes to the dog is minor and harmless. Yet, it’s enough to make the dog back off. After getting the shock a couple of times, most dogs don’t go near their boundary, even if they see a stray animal on the other side.
There are advantages and disadvantages to using an electronic fence. A dog that is head strong and stubborn may go right through the boundary quickly after he gets a shock. Remembering the shock, though, may prevent him from reentering the yard. Another disadvantage is even the best electronic dog fence will keep you dog in, but won’t keep other dogs out.
The main advantage of the electrical dog fence is the appearance. You can still have a beautifully landscaped yard and keep your dog close to home. Another advantage is that the dog seems to learn his boundaries quicker than with the traditional fencing.
