Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire terrier, a small dog in the breed of toy dogs, was originally bred to kill rats and mice. Small dogs were give the name of ‘toy’ because due to their small size, they resembled and actual “toy”. Toy Yorkshire terriers are so small, they can be kept in your pocket or purse weighing only 5 to 7 pounds. There were other Yorkshire terrier names to describe this dog such as ‘Yorkie’ or ‘ratter’.

As with many ‘teacup’ dogs, there is much controversy about the reality of if the teacup Yorkshire terrier dog exists. Some Yorkshire terrier breeders believe teacup Yorkshire terriers are nothing more than the runt of the litter, and the result of unscrupulous Yorkshire terrier breeders trying to make money cross breeding dogs in a way that is not 100% healthy. They state these small teacups weighing only 2 or 3 pounds are a health risk with their size making them more susceptible to illness, some life threatening. Another thing they claim is the breeders look at Yorkshire terrier pictures of dogs they want to breed together and breed them with little regard to the outcome other than the size and physical appearance.

You speak with another Yorkshire terrier breeder and he’ll tell you the teacup is brought about by carefully selecting and breeding only the top quality dogs. Yorkshire terriers are very susceptible to hypoglycemic shock (low blood sugar) and teacups have bigger problems with this due to their small size. Yorkshire terrier dogs are prone to cataracts, tracheal collapse and liver shunt.
