The Maltese is a toy breed of dog covered with long, silky white hair. Maltese dogs weigh only 4 to 7 pounds. At birth a Maltese puppy will only way a couple of ounces. They are a friendly and affectionate dog for the family. They love getting attention, playing, and are full of energy.
A popular dog that doesn’t shed, the Maltese is a healthy specimen not having near the health issues of other dog breeds. As the Maltese dog gets older, however, they do become more susceptible to heart and lung problems as well as ear infections. For some reason, they seem to be “hypoallergenic” to people that are usually allergic to dogs and animals. Some say this is because their hair is so similar to human hair.
There are many people that really love the teacup Maltese, but there are those that say the “teacup” Maltese does not exist. The AKC only acknowledges the Maltese believing that the teacups are just regular Maltese that are little. This has and always will be a controversy to the Maltese lovers. When they are Maltese puppies, they are so little, that it is too soon to make a determination.
