Dachshund

The Dachshund is a breed of the hound family with short legs and a long body. The Dachshunds have been called ‘wiener dog’, ‘hot dog’ or ‘sausage dog’. One only has to look at them to know why. Dachshund dogs were bred to scent out and hunt small animals that dwelled in holes. Despite their original purpose for hunting, they make excellent family pets. Cartoon artists due to their funny shape and looks have also used them.

Dachshunds are not a big dog weighing only 16 to 28 pounds being much longer than tall. They come in a variety of colors, but the most prominent are red, black, and tan. Some come in colors of light tan with hazel, green or blue eyes. Dachshund puppies of this color are very popular. Dachshund breeders can crossbreed to bring about these different colors. A Dachshund breeder can tell you the variations that can be possible as far as coloring, size and personality.

There are three types of Dachshund:

· The smooth Dachshund is the first original. They are a breed of longhaired Dachshunds.
· The wirehair Dachshund is considered a cross between the smooth Dachshunds, Schnauzers and Terriers. Their wire-coats protected them against thorns and burrs while hunting.
· The long-coat Dachshunds were used as bird dogs.

Dachshund breeders say that even though they are the same family, they each have their own personalities. This is the same for the mini Dachshunds. In general, Dachshunds are loving and very loyal dogs. They love to run around and play. They are very prone to spinal injuries so they are discouraged from jumping and climbing. Hip problems also seem to affect the Dachshund and the mini Dachshund. This is believed to be from the small breeding.

A miniature Dachshund will only weigh around 10 pounds. They are very lovable and playful dogs, but have a stubborn streak in them that makes it difficult to train them. They have very serious and soul-filled eyes that seem to be full of emotion. This one factor helps Dachshunds for sale sell quickly. This is especially true for miniature Dachshund puppies.

There are a number of Dachshund rescue groups and organizations involved in the rescue and survival of homeless, abandoned and abused Dachshunds and miniature Dachshunds. One of the stipulations is that the new owners must spay or neuter the Dachshund dog or Dachshund puppy they wish to adopt.
