Dog Breeds
At one time, a dog was a dog. There didn’t seem to be very many breeds of dogs as we hear about now. The dog breeds existed, but we just weren’t made aware of different breeds of dogs. In the day and age of Lassie, everyone thought of collies when they thought of dogs. In certain areas, poodles were what came to mind when you thought of small dog breeds or toy dog breeds.
Years ago, we didn’t have just one dog breed, but we didn’t have as many as we have now. Many of the newer breeds are a direct result of dog breeding. Dog breeders would work with different varieties of breeding by mixing two different breeds of dog to bring out certain qualities they desired. This same practice is used today as ‘line breeding’ to bring out desirable traits in a certain line of dog. Breeding dogs has been around as long as dogs have been.
In addition to all the dog breeds we are aware of there are also rare dog breeds. Some of these are:
· Aidi
· Barbet
· Cao da Serra De Aires
· Danish Broholmer
· English Coonhound
· Kai Dog
· Iceland Sheepdog
This list is just a small number compared to the total rare dog breeds there are.
If you look at a list of dog by breed, you will find what qualities each dog possesses. Any site or book about dog breeds will have a directory of dog breeds and give you any dog breed info you may want. If you like the boxer dog, breed info will be given telling you all the vital information on boxer dogs.
If you know someone considering getting a dog but not knowing what kind, have them check out a dog breed selector. Dog breed selectors are very helpful. They ask you certain questions about yourself and owning a dog such as if you have children, how much space you have, how much time you have for grooming, do you want a pup or older dog. All these factors are put together and a specific breed is chosen as the breed that would work well for both of you. There are several hundred different dog breeds, but here is a list of a few favorites:
